Tonawanda is one of the most historical cities in the Western New York area. The area was first settled in the early 1800's and saw great growth and prosperity after the creation of the Erie Canal and the railroads that followed soon after. Like the rest of the area, Tonawanda grew its reputation through manufacturing, textiles, and industry. The city has a long and colorful history that goes hand in hand with the success of the Erie Canal and railroads. Even though Tonawanda, like the rest of the area, has seen a transformation, its people have remained a defining factor. Many Tonawanda residents have ties to the area that go back generations.
Today, Tonawanda is primarily a residential area made up of beautiful waterfront communities. The area is known for its annual Canal Fest, the largest festival of its kind in the area. During Canal Fest, residents from Tonawanda and North Tonawanda come together to promote the community, celebrate Tonawanda's history, and patronize local businesses. More than 100,000 people typically attend Canal Fest; it is one of the most popular annual events in all of New York State. What better way to celebrate our close-knit community than by celebrating everything that makes us unique?
Whether you are new to the community or your family has lived here for generations, Tonawanda is always ready to welcome you.
